Rekha Puranik, the visionary and founder of the Rekha & Sudhir Puranik Foundation has a lifelong passion for helping others. In 2000, Puranik, affectionately known as “Maamaji,” decided to fulfill her desire to provide the community’s neediest children with an opportunity to stop the cycle of generational poverty and illiteracy and help them fulfill their potential.
Growing up in a middle class family in India, Maamaji often volunteered to care for children from the most destitute families, allowing the parents to earn daily wages without worry.
Her life….and the Foundation’s mission is centered on a tale about an ant and dove. One day, an ant falls into a pond and desperately seeks help. A dove sitting nearby sees the ant and throws a leaf into the pond. The ant climbs on it and safely floats to shore. A few days later, the dove gets caught in a hunter’s net. The ant sees the hunter coming to catch the dove. As he comes close, the ant bites him, giving the dove the opportunity to fly away.
Maamaji says, “This is how life is. We don’t know when or who will come by to change our lives for the better. When we are compassionate, aware of our surroundings and respectful of nature, the quality of life for everyone improves automatically and naturally.” Maamaji builds the foundation of all programs under the Puranik Foundation with this underlying principal in mind.
